GUEST POST: Unschooling with Salma from Chasing Rainbow

Asalaam Alaikum/Hi All!!

I am so excited to be able to share this lovely guest post from Salma over at Chasing Rainbow. I have had the pleasure of chatting to her mashAllah and through her blog I have gotten to know about her and her family. I was extremely grateful when she agreed to do a post about unschooling as I was curious about it.

Enjoy her post, feel free to comment and definitely check out her blog.

Bismillah...

Hello lovely readers of Muslim Mummy's blog. My name is Salma. I am a Muslimah, wife and mother of four from Canada.

I have been asked by Muslim Mummy to share with you (her readers) about my unschooling adventures with my daughters.  One of the questions that she asked was what exactly unschooling is? This post is a one of 5 posts that I have written about the subject, thus, if you would like to go back to my introduction, please visit my blog for that part of the discussion.

There are so many things that I could share about unschooling, however, I thought for the purpose of this post, I will speak about one aspect of our unschooling journey- Playful World Travelling.

Playful World Travelling
The idea of Playful World Traveling is not my own. It comes from Maria Lugones influential paper about "Playful world travelling and Loving Perception" . One of Lugones' request in her paper, is that women of colour learn to travel to each other's world, in the art of playful world travelling.

In her paper she speaks about the experience of people who are outside of the mainstream and how they navigate and come to a place of consciousness.  This consciousness, I assume, would mean many things to different people. Since my children are still young and inexperienced in the ways of the world, I searched for a way to help them achieve this.

Like all parents I want to teach my children how to identify with and commit to loving others.  As a university educated woman, who has travelled to various parts of the world, and love the beauty of people as a whole, I have seen the best and the worst of humanity.

After 9/11, in the face of terrorist threat,  we (as Muslims) are faced with the call to prove that we are not "one of them".  This has personally affected how we see ourselves and others. In addition, as little girls with brown skin, my children come from a place where they are routinely referred to as Minorities.

26 A-Z

Lugones takes the art if world travelling to another level by using Marilyn Frye's notion of "arrogant perception".  Arrogant perception can be defined in many ways, but for the purpose of this article and for my own personal understanding, we (at home) consider it to be a barrier that keeps humans from connecting with others.

Arrogant perception make us judge others without looking at the context of their lives. In essence, it creates binaries that are debilitating and destructive to our human relations. We often think that our way of doing things is right; our practices- natural. We then turn others into objects of our perception. Haven't we all done it?

Armed with the knowledge that they will face a lot in the world, that they will objectify others, and be objectified, and with my own desire to help them learn how to navigate the world I came up with the 26 A-Z project.
The 26 A-Z project consists of 26 carefully selected documentaries; each title beginning with a letter from the alphabet.
Our documentaries focus on disability, poverty, war, environmental disasters, religion, nature, racism, sexism, politics and gender issues.

Iman and Amira have watched 7 of the 26 documentaries that we have chosen together. I attempt to keep the girls well-rounded by offering various media outlets to highlight theme and ideas. For example, when we watched Yellowstone: Battle for Life, the girls created their own national park. Iman looked at the life of the animals in all 4 seasons; while Amira recreated a scene from the film of a park fire, and wrote about the danger to the animals.

The 26 A-Z project is not just about watching documentaries. It is about exploring what we learn by looking at the world, and what we gain when we experience creativity and reality simultaneously. 26 A-Z has allowed me to explore with my children, and learn about privilege, and the responsibility of every human being to care for each other, protect the planet, and speak the truth.

In conclusion
The art of "world" travelling is beautiful, because the purpose of it is to help my daughters understand the reality of other people’s experiences of oppression. It forces them to become a part of the bigger picture, by being open-minded. This does not mean that they will not be selfish, and ignorant. It does not mean that they will always have empathy.

It certainly does not mean that they will not face discrimination, and indulge in self-pity. It has allowed them to be aware of the world, and to look at  it with (if not different), then new eyes.
InshaAllah, my goal is to help my children to ask questions, make wise decisions, and love Allah's creation.

Note: I have used Lugones's article, and Marilyn Frye's term as my guide. Opinions and thoughts expressed by me are not directly related to her definition of world traveling.

GUEST POST: Technology's Newest Dangerous Weapons

Asalaam Alaikum/Hi all!

My very first guest post while I am on my holidays is from Celebral Tickle and I completely agree with this post! I always look forward to Celebral Tickle's post as she says it how it is and won't hold back!

Photobucket

Everywhere I go, I’m on the lookout for them. I duck, run and hide whenever I see one. I turn my back and shield my children with my body if one is in sight. They are dangerous. They can ruin lives. They have distressed people to the point of extreme hypertension, and even death. What are they?

In this age of smart phones and bluetooth headsets, when you see a camera phone being held upright, you never know whether the owner is writing a text message, playing a game, selecting some audio to listen to, or recording you either by photo or video. I live in the constant fear that members of my family and/or myself may end up on YouTube, Facebook or someone’s blog because someone decided to put us there without our knowledge and consent.

And although camera phones are some of the least obvious ways to photog someone without his/her knowledge, traditional cameras and camcorders are fully capable of doing so as well, especially the new age digital ones which can zoom in from a distance so far away, that you would not be able to see the photographer/videographer unless you were looking at them through a magnifying lense of your own.

Why is it that I and others now have to live in fear that going about our days, minding our own business may land us on an internet website? Why do some people take pleasure in recording images of strangers and then sharing those images as if they are theirs to do with as they please? Oh, hang on, many people will argue that they have the right to record anything or anyone they desire within a public space, and any image they capture belongs to them. This is the same logic and legality which allows the paparazzi business to thrive, isn’t it?! But when does one’s right to film someone end and a person’s right not to be filmed begin?

Regardless of what the laws of any land state, I am firmly opposed to anyone being able to possess and use clips of anyone else without the express permission of the person of whom such recordings are made. I think that it is just plain wrong and a complete invasion of my privacy for someone to own, share, publish or use photographs of me without my permission. For me, that is the ultimate violation of my rights.

Many people have no idea just how dangerous having their photos online can be, but I do, and based on that I choose not to have mine there. So it is beyond appalling for me to find photos of myself, which I never even knew existed, on Facebook, with my name attached, posted by people who are neither my friends virtually nor in real life.

Think that I’m being paranoid on this subject? Read this article! www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1310965/Special-Investigation-It-took-just-hour-internet-experts-private-womans-life.htmlhttp://www.letsgodigital.org/images/artikelen/414/camera_phones.jpg

I am not trying to dictate to anyone how to live his/her life and whether or not to post photos, videos or other identifying or sensitive information of him/herself and family online. All I’m saying is that I am allowed to have a say on who can possess photos of myself and children and what can or can’t be done with those photos, and whatever I decide on the subject should be respected.

Tinyme! Yay!

On Tuesday I attended the Tinyme event hosted by Blog Match, at the Oundle Mill in Oundle. I almost did not go (due to nerves!) but a fellow blogger, MummyBird, convinced me and now I am glad I went.

I must admit I had never heard of Tinyme before and as usual I turned to google!
Geek + Cute = YAY. The extremely very true story behind tinyme.

Once upon a time 3 young dads (who happen to have 13 kids under 9) combined a whole bunch of geeky high tech machines, some generous dollops of cuteness, a slightly loopy team of people and mixed them together with the world wide webby thingy. The result was amazing.... a comprehensive range of affordable, premium quality, designer personalised products for kids. All custom made and shipped to you in a jiffy.

Their description of who they are made me smile and it was partially this that also made me attend the event...I was curious to know more.

Tinyme have a range of products which include personalised bags, name labels, height charts, wall decor, stationary and personalised books.

They are an Australian based company, moo.com.au, who have lauched their new brand Tinyme. Myself and other bloggers had the pleasure of meeting 2 of the 3 dads behind Tinyme. You could see how enthusiastic and passionate they are about their products and they are keen to spread the word in the UK. And rightly so, their products are definitely cute.

We were able to take a look at some of their products which included the bags and personalised books in the pictures. It was nice to be able to see some of their products and actually see the quality and I was particularly impressed by the personalised journals.

The great thing about Tinyme is that they have 100's of designs for most of their products, so you can completely customise your product and be almost unique! If you go onto their website you can customise items and see how they look before you commit yourself to buy them.

My particular favourite has to be the wall stickers:

Tinyme had displayed the wall stickers on a glass wall and the effect was impressive. They were totally easy to remove and re-position and, of course, were cute! The only downside is that Tinyme currently only have 2 themes for the wall stickers. But the good news is that they are looking to create more. I will definitely consider buying some when I get round to redecorating munchkins room!

So why not check out their website tinyme.co.uk? If you join their newsletter you will have access to 19 pages of free printable fun which include door hangers and masks.

AND if you join the newsletter you will get 10% off your first order of over £35!

If you like what you see then follow them on Twitter and like them on Facebook to be kept updated!

Being the youngest child sucks at times!

Asalaam Alaikum/Hi all

I am the youngest in my family by 9 years......I was a mistake!

And today I have decided I definitely hate being the youngest.

According to some, being the youngest child is an advantageous position due to all the affection you get from family.

I must say I was kind of spoiled by the family when I was younger. Even my (then) 9 year old brother, who had threatened to pull my hair if I turned out to be a girl, fell in love with me when he saw me.

However being the youngest is beginning to haunt me.

It is almost as if the family do not realise, or won't accept, I am all grown up!

Take for example when I got pregnant. They panicked because they thought I would be unable to cope. And then when I took munchkin to Pakistan for the first time my mum went too! The reason was they wanted to go see my grandmother but I KNOW it was because they were worried about munchkin.

Anyone who reads that and doesn't know me probably thinks I must be totally incompetent.

Also being the youngest I feel like (and still do) that alot of pressure and hopes were placed on me, in particular in areas where my older siblings may have failed, for example going to uni. I don't know if it is a general thing, or even if it is a cultural thing. I often feel as though I am still being treated like a child and it is seriously beginning to bug me.

Are any of you the youngest child? Do you enjoy it? Hate it?

Am I being over cautious??

Asalaam Alaikum/Hi all

As some of you know I am meant to be flying to Pakistan on the 22nd of this month and will be staying there for 3 weeks.

I did a post about the holiday possibly being cancelled due to dengue fever: see my post here.

With less than 2 weeks to go the tickets have not been cancelled and we are shopping on the basis that we are going.

Hubby isn't very helpful and is saying that he is going to go whatever. I have said I will be thinking about it seriously before I decide for definite. He is not pressurising me and will respect whatever I decide.

However, I am being made to feel by some that I am paranoid and over reacting. I don't know why but I am feeling very nervous about going and have a gut feeling that this is a very bad idea.

Some family members are trying to reassure me that there is nothing to worry about. Apparently there are no known cases in our area. However the city that is worst hit is just 2 hours away and ummm helllo...mosquitoes CAN fly can't they?!

Hubby's friend has got hold of some medicine that apparently helps the white blood cells.....the virus binds to white blood cells and enters them.

LIKE HELL am I going eat some random medicine and give it to my daughter. Last time I did that I fainted at the top of the stairs and fell DOWN the stairs. I think people thought I was the battered wife when they saw the cut above my eye!!

I am also being told that because it is now getting colder, the weather will kill off the mosquitoes. Ok, that may be so, but that is going to take a while.

I have been researching for the last couple of nights again as it is worrying me to the point that I am having sleepless nights. The sentence in bold below is worrying me:

Typically, people infected with dengue virus are asymptomatic (80%) or only have mild symptoms such as an uncomplicated fever. Others have more severe illness (5%), and in a small proportion it is life-threatening. The incubation period (time between exposure and onset of symptoms) ranges from 3–14 days, but most often it is 4–7 days. Therefore, travelers returning from endemic areas are unlikely to have dengue if fever or other symptoms start more than 14 days after arriving home. Children often experience symptoms similar to those of the common cold and gastroenteritis (vomiting and diarrhea), but are more susceptible to the severe complications.
(taken from Wikipedia)

And another article which was written on 11th September:
Dengue In Lahore, Dengue Fever Mosquito:The latest deaths bring the total number of people killed by dengue virus in the city to 10. Some 539 people have been confirmed afflicted with dengue virus in the city over the last 24 hours. On the other hand, at least 350 policemen, who mostly perform duties outdoors, have been affected by the virus. Official statistics put the total of number of dengue patients in Punjab is over 6,000. However, it is feared the actual number of patients is higher. As many as 142 patients were diagnosed with dengue in the private hospitals of Lahore in the last 24 hours.

I am terrified that I am exposing my only child to an unnecessary risk. But everyone is telling me to go and just be careful, that the risk isn't very high. That we just need to make sure we are covered in mosquito repellent at night. To make sure the room is clear of mosquitoes at night. And apparently by the time we go most of the mosquitoes will be dying if not dead.

If I don't go then people will say I am not going on purpose and am an evil daughter in law (not that I care what people think!)

The percentages for serious cases are low.

And then I think about the whole uproar about the swine flu in the UK. It never got as serious as everyone thought.

Well anyway I am going to see my Dr on Wednesday so will discuss my concerns with him and see what he says.

Thank you for reading....I just needed to get my thoughts about this off my chest before it got too much!!

Argan Secret

Asalaam Alaikum/Hi all!!

I'm the kind of girl who is not really into fashion or expensive styling products etc which is why I don't always comment on your blogs if they are based on fashion or styling products. Sorry but it is of no interest to me what the latest fashion is and what the latest 'must have' product is!

Clothes wise I wear what I find comfortable, and product wise...... well I do not wear make up at all and anything else....I just buy what seems reasonable.

However, I recently came across this product and I love, love, love it soooooo much I just had to share it all with you.

I mentioned that I had cut my hair in this post. I went to the hairdresser and she realised that I don't use many products. I had washed my hair that morning and when I wash my hair I tend to look like I have been electrocuted....my hair gets so frizzy and dry. So she recommended a product that she had come across: Argan Secret hair styling elixir.

I was a bit skeptical as I have tried plenty of products before. They have either made my hair really greasy or made my hair feel rock hard!! In the end I gave up and went for the electrocuted look.

I started getting a bit curious when she couldn't stop raving about it. She wasn't going to profit from me buying it because she wasn't selling it. And to be honest, I liked her. She was friendly and seemed genuine. When I click with people like that I will trust their judgement.

Apparently the hair styling elixir reduces drying time, adds shine, softens hair, manages frizzies and helps protect from sun and wind damage.

Sounds too good to be true yeah?

Well I thought what the heck and went to buy it.

At the shop it was on offer, buy 2 and get 1 free. I am a bit of a sucker for BOGOF so I decided to invest in the shampoo and conditioner too.

First time in my life I have brought such expensive products for my hair.

And I don't regret it one bit!!!

It actually does what it claims to do!!

It has made my hair so soft and manageable mashAllah!! I am no longer walking around with hair out of control and looking abit unhealthy! It doesn't make my hair look greasy and I am sure the hair elixir DOES reduce drying time.

Even though it costs more than I am usually prepared to pay for hair products, I will not think twice about continuing to buy it.

If you use it, or decide to try it, then let me know that you think!!

My biggest pet peeve.....

Asalaam Alaikum/Hi all!!

I have decided to join in with the Britmums Blog Prompt of the Week.

I tried to think of what my pet peeves are: inconsiderate cyclists, people driving big cars who clearly are unable to manage the car, people eating MY chocolate......and then it hit me......and my biggest pet peeve is not as mundane as those listed.

My biggest pet peeve is................................

Asian Aunties!!!

Yes you read that right!! My pet peeve is to do with my culture.

In particular I am talking about Pakistani Asian Aunties.

And to get even closer to home I am talking about my Mum's friends who I am made to call Aunty, when I do have some other rather interesting names for them.

So why, I hear you asking, are they my pet peeve?

Well if you are pakistani you probably totally understand me.

'Aunties' seem to think they can ask you personal questions and pretty much give you advice when it is not wanted.

A particular example I can use is the fact that I have only one 5 year old daughter. Cue the following comments:

'Isn't it time you had another child?'

'You really shouldn't leave having another child so late'.

'Have you been to the doctor to get checked over?'

'Oh I know the details of a very good doctor'.

'Oh well even though it isn't a boy at least you have a child'.

And the list goes on...........

And since I am going to Pakistan in a few weeks I will be getting the comments even more.......... cue FIREWORKS!!!

Headlice!! (Again)

Asalaam Alaikum/Hi all!

Headlice!!! They are nasty little critters.....

The first time munchkin got them was in January. See my post here.

She has now got them again and infected me too.

This time I am having a hard job getting rid of them even though in January it took just one treatment.

I noticed she had them after just 3 days at school. Since then I am combing her regularly and she is still getting them. I found one again tonight so I put on the overnight treatment and sent her to bed!

We first had a good look at the one we found! It was caught in the comb and was still alive. So I put it on the bed and we watched it! In an weird way they are strangely fascinating! (Does that make me sound odd?!)

Don't worry, we killed it before it escaped.

I found one in my head last week and I freaked! I put the treatment on immediately and was washing my hair and drying it at midnight. Poor hubby was trying to sleep as he had an early start.....

I then took a drastic step and the following day cut off my hair.

Ok, ok maybe I over reacted! But my hair was up to my bum and it was difficult to make sure I had treated it effectively! Plus it needed a trim...... the trim just ended up a BIG trim......so now my hair is almost up to the middle of my back.  A LOT easier to manage.

So anyone got any tips of getting rid of headlice?

I have had to put chemicals on munchkins head twice now and really don't want to again. It is strong stuff as when I put it on my hair it caused some of my hair to easily fall out. I am sure I also read somewhere that some headlice have become immune to treatments.

Just thinking about the blasted things is making my head itch!!
