One of my earliest memories of going to Pakistan was when we stopped over at an airport, Dubai I believe it was, and all hell broke loose.

My brother had been to the toilet..and rather than finding the comfort of a 'normal' sit on toilet, he found a hole in the ground in one of the cubicles.

Cue hysteria.

He started demanding his passport from my mum, saying he was going to return to the UK as there was no way he was going to use holes in the ground.

And that is the polite version.

Poor mum calmed him down by phoning my uncle and telling him to immediately go and get a 'sit on' toilet and get it fitted ASAP.

Even back then we were lucky. As we had access to a toilet; even it was simply a flushable hole in the ground. But did you know, that even today, 2.5 billion people live without access to safe toilets?

As a result of there not being safes toilets, every day, 2,000 children die from diarrhoea. Sad isn't it? That so many deaths are occurring but that these deaths could be improved with proper sanitation. That's all it takes. Access to improved sanitation has been deemed a basic human right by the United Nations and to try to prevent these deaths, UNICEF has a Community Approaches to Total Sanitation (CATS) programme to help improve access to basic sanitation. Domestos and the Unilever Foundation have joined forces with UNICEF by supporting this programme.

So what exactly is the CATS programme and how are Domestos involved?

The CATS programme is basically a behaviour change programme. The idea is to promote good hygiene practices, to help create demand for access to toilets and to raise awareness of the sanitation crisis in order to reduce disease transmission.

Although you may not necessarily have heard of the CATS programme, it is already in action in 50 countires around the world. So far, 13.5 million people have had their lives improved.

Domestos is supporting the programme by contributing 5% of its average proceeds received from the sale of specially marked bottles of Domestos in select countries to the programme. The selected countries are Phillipines, South Sudan, Vietnam, India, Indonesia and Brazil.
