Family Game time with 5 Pillars Family Game

I am always on the look out for good Islamic games to add to our collection and I recently came across the 5 Pillars Family Game from Goodword so had to purchase it to play with the girls.

These days the trend seems to be for children to be using screens for entertainment; games on mobile phones, tablets, TV, games consoles and sometimes I feel like a good family night in with board games rarely seems to happen. And I have been determined to change that. So I was pleased to come across this game which is not just a family game, but it helps teach the children about the pillars of Islam.

Whats in the Box?

  • Instruction booklet
  • 60 Brainteaser Cards
  • 15 Act it or Draw it Cards
  • 15 Match it Cards
  • Sand Timer
  • 6 playing pieces
  • 1 Dice
  • 1 Playing Board

The Different Cards

Challenge Cards

There are two different kinds of challenge cards: Brainteaser Cards and Guess Cards.

These cards have questions from the following categories:

  • Shahadah (faith)
  • Salah (prayer)
  • Sawm (fasting)
  • Hajj (pilgrimage)
  • Zakah (charity)
  • Seerah (the life of the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم)
  • Sahabha (the lives and stories of the companions)
  • The Quran
  • The Hadith
  • General Questions about Islam

The Brainteaser Card has 3 questions and the player has to answer from any of the three questions. The Guess Card has 6 clues and 1 answer. The timer is also used as each player gets 1 minute to answer their question.

Fun Cards

There are two different fun cards. One is Matching Cards and the others are Act it or Draw it Cards. The Acting and Drawing cards are charade cards which tell you what to do – for example draw a prayer mat with your eyes closed! The matching cards have Arabic phrases which you have to match with the English meaning. Note: for the drawing cards you will need pen and paper as this is not included in the game.

How to Play

The game is recommended for ages 8+ and 2- 6 players can play the game. You can play either individually or make it a team effort; a team effort might be more suitable if you have younger children who are still learning about Islam and have limited knowledge. To start off the game, the first player picks any card from the Brainteaser Cards or the Guess cards and passes it to the player sitting next to him. This player then reads the question to the player who passed the card. If they get the question right, they receive a point and they have to roll the dice and move forward on the board. Play continues in this manner.

There will be times when the players land on the Fun Card circles or other special circles. When they land on the Fun Card, they have to pick a fun card and follow the directions. The special circles have specific instructions such as ‘Throw Again’ or ‘Go Back 1 Space’ making the game more fun and interesting for the children.

Every player has to get to the finish. The winner isn’t necessarily the first player to get to the finish point…but they must be the first player and also have the highest number of points. Remember to keep a track of your points while you play!

What Did We Think?

Once we got our head around the different cards and the instructions, the game is relatively simple to play. And definitely one for all the family. You aren’t just playing a game but learning about Islam while you play. It kind of made me realise how limited my own knowledge is, especially when the eldest beat me! It can be frustrating for the younger ones who may not know the answers to the questions and don’t get many right so don’t get to to move their pieces much….therefore I would recommend working as a team with the younger ones until they are more confident in answering questions and until their knowledge increases. But that is the beauty of the game, it helps you identify areas where you may be lacking in knowledge and focus on them to learn to increase your knowledge. Learning about Islam never stops!
