If you need a bit of a spiritual uplift about being a woman and a woman’s journey from ‘the inception of the soul to the end of life on earth’ then this is a must have book.

Turning the Tide is about turning away from the restrictive beliefs, habits and fads that have starved women spiritually. It is about turning towards the eternal message of the Qur’an and Prophetic wisdom, the primary sources of Islam.’

Suma Din

Following the stages of a woman’s life, the chapters within the book are:

  • The Soul: Wide Oceans
  • Childhood: Snowflake Crystals
  • Youth: Streams
  • Knowledge: Springs
  • The Heart: Sea of Change
  • Health and Appearance: Lake and Reflections
  • Marriage: Clouds and Seas
  • Motherhood: Raindrops
  • The Age of Wisdom: Treasures in the Sea
  • The Soul’s Journey On: The Shoreline

Each chapter follows the same format; Introduction, Myriad Voices, Translations of Verses from the Quran and Hadith, Dua’s and finally Noble Women.

Introduction

The introduction to each chapter is brief but concise.

Myriad Voices

These are fictional voices in the form of poems and thoughts. The section focus’s on a woman’s thought about that particular chapter, her thoughts, emotions, questions and more. For example in the marriage section the ‘voice’ states:

‘Time adds maturity, Thought the scene may vary from year to year, the changing tones and hues bring ever-increasing pleasure.’

Translations of Verses from the Quran and Hadith

This section helps provide an Islamic Perspective to the section being covered. Each chapter provides a wealth of verses from the Quran and hadith to help give some meaning and some understanding to the issues raised in the chapter.

Dua’s

Supplications are important and many are in the Quran. This section provides you with dua’s from the Quran which relate to each chapter and also from hadith.

Noble Women

My favourite section focus’s on the life of a righteous woman who relate to the topic of that chapter. For example in the marriage section, the noble woman mentioned is Khadijah (RA) who was a ‘constant in her support and a partner of distinction’.

My Thoughts

I loved how water was the theme throughout the book with it’s chapters, how each part of a woman’s journey can be related to water in some form. This was also evident through the illustrations used. But why the use of water? The author explains how water is the source of all life and that a Muslim’s life is tied to purifying oneself.

Every woman who reads this is sure to be able to relate to each chapter. From the myriad voices to the Quran and hadith used, to the example of the noble women, this book is ideal for anyone who requires a spiritual uplift and are striving for a better connection with their faith and understanding as a woman.

The book is one that you will find yourself turning to again and again when in need of some guidance or inspiration.
