Holiday Cancelled? Dengue fever

Asalaam Alaikum/Hi all!
Well I got a bit of a shock today.
I asked hubby to get the suitcase out of the garage for me and give it a bit of a clean……no I wasn’t being a lazy cow but I had noticed a spider around it and they seriously freak me out! I wanted to start putting things in it ready for our holiday to Pakistan in 4 weeks. Last time we went I left all the packing until the night before and the suitcase broke! So I thought I would break from the norm and start packing early. Yes, 4 weeks early!
Well hubby totally surprised me by saying there was no point in getting it out as we may not be going.
Uh hello???? Since when???? Care to enlighten me?????????
Apparently he has spoken to his father who said that there is an outbreak of dengue fever. It has already claimed many lives.
My mother had mentioned something to me the other day and told me to be extra careful when we went but I thought she was being over protective. However when I heard my father in law was considering stopping us from going that set alarm bells off, as he is desperate to see his grandchild again.
Having never heard of dengue fever, I turned to my trusted friend google.
Taken from Wikipedia:
Dengue virus (DENV) in one of four serotypes is the cause of dengue fever. It is a mosquito-borne single positive-stranded RNA virus of the family Flaviviridae; genus Flavivirus.[1][2] All four serotypes can cause the full spectrum of disease.[1]

Symptoms include feverheadachemuscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash that is similar to measles. In a small proportion of cases the disease develops into the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleedinglow levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure occurs.

Considering mosquitoes in Pakistan seem to love my blood this is slighty worrying!
My hubby has the Pakistani channels on the TV upstairs so I checked out the Pakistani news. They were showing images of people in hospital who had caught it.
I do not want to unnecessarily expose munchkin to it and am grateful to my father in law for highlighting it. He has said he will keep an eye on the situation over the next 2 weeks and let us know.
It is beginning to look like we may not go.
Just when I was actually beginning to look forward to it aswell!
Oh well.

  • Salaam alaykum,

Oh too bad that you may not go. But ofcourse it's more important you and your family stay safe/healthy.

I feel you on the mosquito bites. When we go to my inlaws the mosquitos are also happy to see me.

  • Wa alaikum asalaam. Yes its definitely more important for us to stay healthy.

I remember when I was younger and we went pak…I woke up one morning and my arm was covered in bites. Went to the local doctor and said the mosquitoes have been having a party!

  • How bad, you were so looking forward to it! But better to know now than on the way to Pakistan………because there is no need to get yourself and your family exposed to this kind of troubles.
    Have a lovely Monday!!xx
