Review: Ramadan Around the World

Alhamdulillah my children are lucky in that they have access to lots of Islamic books which I didn’t have as a child. Especially related to Ramadan. However sometimes there is a lack of diversity in some books; however Ramadan Around the World specifically explores diversity and different cultures within the Muslim community.

Join the Ramadan Moon as it travels the world to visit children and their families observing Ramadan…….The purpose of this book is to illustrate the diversity of the global Muslim community.

13 different countries are mentioned in the book to show that Ramadan is indeed celebrated around the world.

Each country has a 2 page colourful spread, providing a glimpse into the traditions of the children in that country. For example in Cairo, Yusuf and Lana join their family and friends in decorating the streets with colourful banners while in Morocco the the mesaharaty walks the streets, playing a drum and singing rhyming takes to wake people up to begin their fast.

The book starts with a couple of surahs from the Quran emphasising that Allah has created us and talking about diversity:

And of his signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and colours. Indeed, in that are signs for those with knowledge.’

Surah Ar-Rum 30:22

Diversity

What specifically made an impact on me and made the book all the more unique and special is that the diversity shown wasn’t just the fact that there are Muslims around the world that have their own traditions and customs, but also the fact that people can be different via their health. For example autism and diabetes are mentioned in the book along with a hearing impaired child who relies on sign language. The mentions are brief but it is lovely to see this in a book as things like this aren’t often mentioned…and it is important for children to know about these possible differences.
