Review: Basic Fun Lite Brite Ultimate Classic

Disclosure: We received Basic Fun Lite Brite Ultimate Classic for the purposes of review. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

So what is Lite Brite? Some of you may know this as it is a bit of a classic. It is basically a light box on which you create peg art and make the pictures glow! It is simple but such fun for the children, and even the adults!

What is in the Box?

  • Lite-Brite box (insert your own batteries)
  • Instruction Guide
  • 6 templates
  • 200+ pegs of different colours – white, yellow, blue, pink, orange and green

How to Make the Pictures

Lite-Bright is so simple to use! Simply use the pegs to create the pictures. They insert easily into the box.

There are two ways the children can use the templates. Firstly you can place the templates on the box and follow the colour coded letters by pushing the pegs through the paper. Or simply use the guides as a template and do it freestyle, working out where the pegs should be placed. Bee preferred to do it freestyle so that the templates were not full of holes and she could use them again without too much trouble.

Of course, if you don’t want to use the templates the children can let their imagination go wild and create their own amazing pictures.

Once the images are created, then thats there the fun bit comes in. The box creates 4 different light shows – blinking, pulsing, steady and random.

Templates are:

  • Unicorn
  • Sailboat
  • Mountains
  • Flowers
  • Dune Buggy
  • Elephant

Bee first had a go at the sailboat and then the Unicorn.

What Did We Think?

Bee found it relatively easy to follow the templates without putting the templates on the box. She really had to concentrate to get the pegs in the right places and it kept her occupied. I was actually surprised at how much she enjoyed it. It is recommended for ages 4+ but at age 8 it was still perfect for her.

Lite-Brite itself is great for travelling – you can take the box and the pegs in the car and it will keep the children occupied as they get busy creating pictures.

What we also liked about it is that the box can also be stood up so the pictures can be placed upright on the children’s tables for them to enjoy.

If you want to see the lights in action then have a watch of the video!

If you like the look of Lite Brite then it is available to purchase from Smyths Stores.
