Planning a New Kitchen

This post is written in collaboration with Homify.

We moved into our first home 10 years ago and the kitchen was the one thing I wanted to change as it was all white and basic and simply wasn’t very homely. It took a few  years before we actually got round to changing it but  as the kitchen was narrow there was not much we could do with it. Unfortunately we ended up with a ‘cowboy builder’ who actually ruined some parts of the kitchen so we are planning on redoing the kitchen again in a few years.

I do believe the kitchen can be the heart of the home, but this really depends on the size of the kitchen too. If you have a small kitchen then the kitchen can be classed as unimportant and simply just used to cook. My dream is to have a home with a large kitchen with a combined dining area which can be used to relax in and have dinner parties. Ultimately the kitchen can end up being one of the most stylish rooms in your home; there are so many designs and gadgets that can make up your dream kitchen.

If you decide to improve your kitchen then planning it is vital as there are so many styles that you can choose from, for example classic, contemporary, minimalist and many more.

  • Do some research by looking for some inspiration online, in magazines or even take a look at friends kitchens.
  • Decide what you want the kitchen for; simply to cook, as a family area or perfect for entertaining? Or even a combination of all three.
  • Sit down and plan where you want all appliances and cupboards to go. Do it to scale if you can so you know how much space you have. Most places that you can purchase kitchens from can help you with this.

One of the things I wanted in my kitchen was floating shelves. We did put one up which was a simple glass shelf. However as the kitchen was poorly designed it didn’t look right where it was fitted so I eventually removed it. My hope in the future is to have some fitted with lights. These ones are just perfect!

One of my dreams is to get fitted appliances as currently none of mine are built in. In addition to this my dream is to have a kitchen large enough to have an island in the middle of it.

What would your dream kitchen be like?
